CORPUS CHRISTI COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE
The Anglo-Saxon & Medieval Manuscript Collection
The collection of Medieval manuscripts held at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge is one of the foremost in the Western World. In particular it is renowned for the quality and number of its Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, which devolved mainly from the famous collection deposited by Archbishop Parker on his death in 1575. The unusually good condition of his collection, and its remarkable intactness, owe much to the special condition imposed by Archbishop Parker.
Among the great treasures of the collection are the Canterbury Gospels, the Peterborough Psalter, Chaucers Troilus and Criseyde, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, the Dover Bible and the Bury Bible.
There are six main subject areas in the manuscripts: Theology; The Bible and Biblical Studies; Law Manuscripts; Literature and Music, with the Greek and Latin Classics; Historical Manuscripts and Medica and the Natural Sciences. Separate sections have been made up of each of these, and the remainder of the manuscripts (mainly those containing a variety of subjects) are contained in a seventh section under the general heading Secular Studies.
Thus most of the main areas of Anglo-Saxon and Medieval study are to be found in this magnificent collection of some 400 volumes, on 155 reels of 35mm silver positive roll microfilm.
The collection may be purchased as a whole, by subject section, or by individual reels. Prices as below or on request. Detailed contents list available free on request.
The manuscript titles are taken from M.R. James two-volume A descriptive catalogue of the manuscripts in the Library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
C.U.P. 1912. James one-line titles (and in some cases titles based on James description of contents) are intended only as a guide and finding aid for the microfilm. For full details reference should be made to the very comprehensive entries in James catalogue. The catalogue is out of print but can be supplied in microfilm if required. Please enquire.

TRINITY APOCALYPSE: Trinity College, Cambridge ON CD-ROM
The production of fully illustrated and luxurious texts of the Apocalypse, produced specifically for a lay audience, is perhaps the most characteristic and substantial achievement of English manuscript illumination in the second half of the 13th c. and is certainly without parallel on the continent. One of the earliest of the series is the Trinity Apocalypse, which with its use of
deep saturated colours and sophisticated design represents, without doubt, the most outstanding and beautiful example of the entire series.

PAPERS OF THE SOCIETY OF DILETTANTI
(1736-1967)
This was originally a Society of young noblemen and gentlemen who had visited Italy and gone on the Grand Tour. It started purely as a social club, but from 1732 members met regularly. Their interest included the architectural and archaeological remains of Greece, the Near East and Italy, and significantly, from the 1750s, they promoted an English Academy of Painting and Sculpture, which ultimately led to the formation of the Royal Academy. From their earliest meetings the Society appointed a painter, among whom were Knapton (the first one), Reynolds, Leighton, Sargent, etc. These papers consist of Minute Books from 1736, Manuscripts Letter Books from 1736-1866, and General Papers, Accounts, etc. The records provide an important record of intellectual life in the 18th-19th

(formerly Quarterly Economics Reviews)
The extensive series of the Economist Intelligence Unit provide accurate up-to-the-minute assessments of the general economic situation in some

SUN INSURANCE FIRE POLICY REGISTERS 1775-87 with the ROYAL EXCHANGE ASSURANCE RECORDS 1775-87
During the late 1960s historians began to appreciate the importance of fire insurance policies of the 18th and 19th centuries as a source of information on property, its nature, its value, value and ownership. Although documents relating to fire insurance were not new to them, no systematic use had been made of the voluminous policy registers of the fire offices until the recognition that such policies could contribute to research into methods for measuring the role of capital formation during Britains Industrial Revolution. The availability of these records on microfilm provides researchers with a convenient way to cover substantial material. A highly detailed index by Professor R Floud and students at Birkbeck College is available on MICROFICHE.

ANTI-SLAVERY MATERIALS
ANTI-SLAVERY MATERIALS: REGIONAL RECORDS AND OTHER PAMPHLETS 18TH-19TH CENTURIES, THE COLLECTION AT JOHN
RYLANDS LIBRARY, UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER
The collection of anti-slavery material at John Rylands Library is a wide ranging and fascinating one, which is of particular importance for the study of provincial philanthropic societies in England. As well as this there are documents from Africa and many from the West Indies in addition to substantial papers concerning the American Civil War.
Forming an important part of the manuscripts at Rylands is the Raymond English collection of the letters, diaries, pamphlets and press cuttings of the abolitionist George Thompson and his son-in-law F W Chesson. It includes items relating to the Aborigine's Protection Society and to the London Emancipation Committee.
Equally significant is the Wilson anti-slavery collection, a collection of 19th century pamphlets given by H G Wilson, the Member of Parliament for Sheffield. A C Wilson gave a large amount of the material held by the library. Well over 100 items under the title "Letters to Mary Anne Rawson, Henry Joseph MP and others" include information on the abolitionist movement in Sheffield. Mrs Rawson was the compiler of the "Bow in the Cloud" and there are numerous letters, rough notes, minutes etc, addressed to this publication, notably from the Sheffield Female Anti-Slavery Society. Also among the documents given by A C Wilson is a collection of miscellaneous poems on slavery copied from several sources, both
manuscript and printed.
The microfilming of the Rylands slavery and anti-slavery papers represents one of the most valuable and practical aids to study in this field.

MEDICAL HISTORY
RELIGIOUS STUDIES
THE GUARDIAN (1846-1951)
Published in association with Lambeth Palace Library
The Guardian was the leading newspaper of the Church of England, documenting the Churchs life week by week for 105 years, and has been described as the most intelligent weekly among the churches. It was founded in 1846 by R. W. Church, later dean of St. Pauls, and Frederic Rogers amongst others to uphold
Tractarian principles and to demonstrate their relevance to the best secular thought of the age. Unlike such papers as The Record (1828) or The Church Times (1863), which appealed more to those holding decidedly party views, it was numbered among the best of the weeklies for the intelligentsia, providing an independent commentary on all the major contemporary theological, intellectual, political and social issues and preoccupations. It
maintained high literary and scholarly standards, offering considered reviews of current theological and other publications. It is therefore an important source particularly for the Victorian and Edwardian periods, and has a contribution to make towards the study of the Oxford Movement, church and State relations, responses to Darwinian thought,
the spread of Christian Socialism, the beginnings of the ecumenical
movement, the challenge of war to Christian consciences, to name but a few examples. It is also a source for obituaries, especially of churchmen and, by the latter years of the 19th century, of influential agnostics and other leading critics of the Church, such as John Stuart Mill and Leslie Stephen. It ceased publication in 1951.

THE PAPERS OF ARCHBISHOP WAKE
From Christ Church, Oxford
The letters of William Wake (1657-1737) cover his time as Bishop of Lincoln (1705-1716) and the first twenty years (1716-1726) of his time as Archbishop of Canterbury. This official correspondence includes three volumes on Ireland and much material on foreign churches, particularly the Gallican church. The affairs of the French church formed one of the chief interests of Wakes life, but there are also letters relating to the church in America, the East and West Indies, and all parts of Europe. The letters and papers cover every aspect of church and secular affairs of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century period, since Wake was extremely influential in both the religious and political climate of the time. Correspondence is not exclusively concerned with religious matters: medals, coins and rare books were among Wakes many interests, and his correspondents often wrote to him on these subjects. In addition, there is a wealth of information on English affairs of the period, political, economic and social. A substantial index is gradually being prepared, and will be available to aid students of the material. This generally unresearched primary resource will be an invaluable addition to any serious library of the religious, political and general history of this important period.

THE WINSLOW PAPERS: A PRIVATE COLLECTION
OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD
The period 1776-1820 was a pivotal period in American history, and the Winslow Papers contribute greatly to a complete understanding of the Eastern Seaboard of North America during that time. The collection consists of 2,500 letters and documents covering the Revolutionary period, but also the years that led up to it and those which followed. The Loyalists' Odyssey, a crucial aspect of the Revolution, is covered in a uniquely detailed way. Edward Winslow (1747-1815), was a Massachusetts patrician descended from a Pilgrim Father.
Throughout the Revolutionary war he played a wide-ranging military role, and in 1783 he and his family went into permanent exile in Nova Scotia, where he led the partition movement that resulted in the creation of New Brunswick, a quintessentially Loyalist province, in 1784.

As well as dealing with ecclesiastical affairs, the Papers are of great social, political and economical interest.

The firm of Janson, Cobb, Person & Co. is believed to be the oldest surviving City of London solicitors. As such, the Archives provide a unique source of information which no researcher or student should be without. The firm has consistently been at the very centre of commercial life in the city, with many high-profile clients including the Royal Exchange Office, the Imperial Fire Office and the Barclay brothers (proprietors of what is now Barclays Bank). The Janson, Cobb, Person archives are particularly unusual and valuable in that they are the actual internal records of the firm and its activities on behalf of clients. Over 650 volumes of printed texts from the 16th and 17th centuries are included in this major new microfilm collection.
Among the treasures of the collection are almost all the works of Byrd to be printed in his lifetime, including the two books of

The collection as a whole consists chiefly of English and continental works from the 16th and 17th centuries, with a few representatives of the 18th century, and is particularly rich in masses, motets, madrigals and anthems. Italian composers are represented by
Palestrina, Victoria, Monteverdi, Marenzio and Grandi, among many others. English madrigalists include
Morley, Gibbons and Peter Philips, together with the influential anthology of translated madrigals
Musica transalpina (1688).
The Christ Church microfilm is based on the Catalogue of Printed Music, Ed. Alois

ART HISTORY
THE GILLOWS' ARCHIVE: "PATTERNS OF ELEGANCE"
The Gillows' Archive is a collection of some 200 manuscript volumes, cash books, ledgers, estimate sketch books and correspondence, which tell the story of 200 years of English furniture history. Gillows of Lancaster was founded in 1695 and alone of the great 18th century manufacturers, Chippendale, Sheraton etc. rode the vagaries of fashion and survived into the 20th century. In particular they benefited from association with the Wyatts (at both Heaton Hall and Tatton Park) and from John Carr of York. Extensive correspondence with salesmen, along with details of packing and transport completes a remarkably full picture of both a craft and industry at work.

THE BODLEIAN LIBRARY: DIARIES OF
SIR FREDERIC MADDEN (1801-73)
"...The descriptions of the coronation of Queen Victoria and the funeral of the Duke of Wellington, for example, are long and full of interesting details. Early chess pieces, coats of arms, seals, architectural details, etc., were often sketched as well as described, and newspaper clippings, prints, timetables, playbills and other ephemera were sometimes inserted. Sir Frederic was a sensitive and articulate critic of all that went on around him, and he documented his life and times as few have done before or since.
Sir Frederic's fascinating diary deserves to be better known, and for students of mediaeval and Victorian England, of the history of chess, of book collecting and of connoisseurship, it is a vast and largely untapped treasure trove."--Philip J. Weimerskirch, Edward G. Miner Library, University of Rochester, in Microform Review, May 1977.

STUDIO INTERNATIONAL 1893 1988 (formerly THE STUDIO)
Studio International was the world's leading international art journal over the period of 97 years during which it appeared continuously. It can now for the first time be purchased as a complete reprint on microfilm.
The history of Studio International is a fascinating one. In its first issue Aubrey Beardsley's work was published for the first time. As
The Studio the journal helped to pioneer art nouveau and led the Art and Craft Movement.
Regular features and spheres of interest in which the journal was particularly strong include architecture and design, authoritative articles on contemporary art movements, controversial articles and comments by artists and critics, and world-wide news of developments of all kinds in the art world.
Its contributors included many famous artists and almost every outstanding critic in the last 90 years. Among them have been Aubrey Beardsley, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Jsainu Noguchi and Will Rothenstein.
Thus it can be seen that Studio International is unique both as a working tool for research into the history of art and as an archival reference guide, and the use of colour microfilm (which can be read on most microfilm readers) means that the full effect of the original publication can be properly appreciated.

KINE WEEKLY 1907-71
The new-born cinematograph was quickly recognised as holding the greatest potential as the voice of the modern age and fired the public, artistic and commercial imagination of the entire civilised world. The Thirties were the Golden Years of the cinema and the pages of this continuous popular weekly accurately reflect the development of the cinema after the advent of sound, on into the television era. The golden years of the cinema, the thirties and forties gradually faded away as television came to encroach on family entertainment. Kine Weekly faithfully records this decline, and also the rise of television from its early days as a popular medium.

SLIDE SET: CINEMAS IN BRITAIN
This set of slides of the Cinemas in Britain exhibition (held at the RIBA Heinz Gallery February 23rd to May 5th 1996) traces the development of cinema architecture in Britain.
Arranged chronologically, the slide set (which follows the exhibition) begins by examining the earliest drawings of cinemas pre-First World War and the first British super cinema the Regent in Brighton designed in 1919 by Robert Atkinson. The Twenties are represented by one of the most versatile of cinema architects, George Coles. During the 1930s the Odeon chain was established under the direction of Oscar Deutsch and his cinemas are represented by drawings
and photographs of examples at Harrogate (Harry Weedon), Woolwich & Muswell Hill (George Coles) and the flagship cinema in Leicester Square (Harry Weedon and Andrew Mather). A selection of highly coloured drawings by John Alexander and elegant but unrealised schemes by members of the Tecton Partnership are also included. The exhibition ends with the model and drawings of Erno Goldfingers Odeon at the Elephant & Castle from 1963, which has since been demolished.
