CORPUS CHRISTI COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE
The Anglo-Saxon & Medieval Manuscript Collection
The collection of Medieval manuscripts held at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge is one of the foremost in the Western World. In particular it is renowned for the quality and number of its Anglo-Saxon manuscripts, which devolved mainly from the famous collection deposited by Archbishop Parker on his death in 1575. The unusually good condition of his collection, and its remarkable intactness, owe much to the special condition imposed by Archbishop Parker.
Among the great treasures of the collection are the Canterbury Gospels, the Peterborough Psalter, Chaucer’s Troilus and Criseyde, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, the Dover Bible and the Bury Bible.
There are six main subject areas in the manuscripts: Theology; The Bible and Biblical Studies; Law Manuscripts; Literature and Music, with the Greek and Latin Classics; Historical Manuscripts and “Medica” and the Natural Sciences. Separate sections have been made up of each of these, and the remainder of the manuscripts (mainly those containing a variety of subjects) are contained in a seventh section under the general heading “Secular Studies”.
Thus most of the main areas of Anglo-Saxon and Medieval study are to be found in this magnificent collection of some 400 volumes, on 155 reels of 35mm silver positive roll microfilm.
The collection may be purchased as a whole, by subject section, or by individual reels. Prices as below or on request. Detailed contents list available free on request.
The manuscript titles are taken from M.R. James’ two-volume ‘A descriptive catalogue of the manuscripts in the Library of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge’.
C.U.P. 1912. James’ one-line titles (and in some cases titles based on James’ description of contents) are intended only as a guide and finding aid for the microfilm. For full details reference should be made to the very comprehensive entries in James’ catalogue. The catalogue is out of print but can be supplied in microfilm if required. Please enquire.

TRINITY APOCALYPSE: Trinity College, Cambridge ON CD-ROM
The production of fully illustrated and luxurious texts of the Apocalypse, produced specifically for a lay audience, is perhaps the most characteristic and substantial achievement of English manuscript illumination in the second half of the 13th c. and is certainly without parallel on the continent. One of the earliest of the series is the Trinity Apocalypse, which with its use of
deep saturated colours and sophisticated design represents, without doubt, the most outstanding and beautiful example of the entire series.

PAPERS OF THE SOCIETY OF DILETTANTI
(1736-1967)
This was originally a Society of young noblemen and gentlemen who had visited Italy and gone on the Grand Tour. It started purely as a social club, but from 1732 members met regularly. Their interest included the architectural and archaeological remains of Greece, the Near East and Italy, and significantly, from the 1750’s, they promoted an English Academy of Painting and Sculpture, which ultimately led to the formation of the Royal Academy. From their earliest meetings the Society appointed a painter, among whom were Knapton (the first one), Reynolds, Leighton, Sargent, etc. These papers consist of Minute Books from 1736, Manuscripts Letter Books from 1736-1866, and General Papers, Accounts, etc. The records provide an important record of intellectual life in the 18th-19th

SUN INSURANCE FIRE POLICY REGISTERS 1775-87 with the ROYAL EXCHANGE ASSURANCE RECORDS 1775-87
During the late 1960s historians began to appreciate the importance of fire insurance policies of the 18th and 19th centuries as a source of information on property, its nature, its value, value and ownership. Although documents relating to fire insurance were not new to them, no systematic use had been made of the voluminous policy registers of the fire offices until the recognition that such policies could contribute to research into methods for measuring the role of capital formation during Britain’s Industrial Revolution. The availability of these records on microfilm provides researchers with a convenient way to cover substantial material. A highly detailed index by Professor R Floud and students at Birkbeck College is available on MICROFICHE.

Between 1863 and 1973 the worlds of commerce and industry have altered so radically that in a direct comparison of the two years they would hardly be recognisable. These changes, however, have been gradual, and the comprehensive history of the evolution of the business world can be most fruitfully studied through the pages of a continuous publication such as the
Investors’ Guardian.

ANTI-SLAVERY MATERIALS
ANTI-SLAVERY MATERIALS: REGIONAL RECORDS AND OTHER PAMPHLETS 18TH-19TH CENTURIES, THE COLLECTION AT JOHN
RYLANDS LIBRARY, UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER
The collection of anti-slavery material at John Rylands Library is a wide ranging and fascinating one, which is of particular importance for the study of provincial philanthropic societies in England. As well as this there are documents from Africa and many from the West Indies in addition to substantial papers concerning the American Civil War.
Forming an important part of the manuscripts at Rylands is the Raymond English collection of the letters, diaries, pamphlets and press cuttings of the abolitionist George Thompson and his son-in-law F W Chesson. It includes items relating to the Aborigine's Protection Society and to the London Emancipation Committee.
Equally significant is the Wilson anti-slavery collection, a collection of 19th century pamphlets given by H G Wilson, the Member of Parliament for Sheffield. A C Wilson gave a large amount of the material held by the library. Well over 100 items under the title "Letters to Mary Anne Rawson, Henry Joseph MP and others" include information on the abolitionist movement in Sheffield. Mrs Rawson was the compiler of the "Bow in the Cloud" and there are numerous letters, rough notes, minutes etc, addressed to this publication, notably from the Sheffield Female Anti-Slavery Society. Also among the documents given by A C Wilson is a collection of miscellaneous poems on slavery copied from several sources, both
manuscript and printed.
The microfilming of the Rylands slavery and anti-slavery papers represents one of the most valuable and practical aids to study in this field.

THE GUARDIAN (1846-1951)
Published in association with Lambeth Palace Library
The Guardian was the leading newspaper of the Church of England, documenting the Church’s life week by week for 105 years, and has been described as ‘the most intelligent weekly among the churches’. It was founded in 1846 by R. W. Church, later dean of St. Paul’s, and Frederic Rogers amongst others to uphold
Tractarian principles – and to demonstrate their relevance to the best secular thought of the age. Unlike such papers as The Record (1828) or The Church Times (1863), which appealed more to those holding decidedly ‘party’ views, it was numbered among the best of the weeklies for the intelligentsia, providing an independent commentary on all the major contemporary theological, intellectual, political and social issues and preoccupations. It
maintained high literary and scholarly standards, offering considered reviews of current theological and other publications. It is therefore an important source particularly for the Victorian and Edwardian periods, and has a contribution to make towards the study of the Oxford Movement, church and State relations, responses to D |
