IRISH HISTORY
This series on audiotape considers some
of the leading themes in Irish History from the early
Christian period to the present day. It was recorded
in Ireland and has three aims: to bring research now in
progress to a wider public; to help provide an historical
context for the understanding of contemporary Ireland and,
most of all, to look at Irish history in its own right.
The recordings hope to maintain the high standard of
disinterested scholarship which characterises recent work
on the history of Ireland.

CDA2
AMERICA – THE ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE £39.95
This
intriguing and informative CD-ROM is effectively split
into four sections. Between them they show the main
events of the American Revolution; what caused it, what
influenced those involved and how it ended.
The first section centres on the
political situation in England, which was, at the time,
the governing body of America. This is done through
the official parliamentary debates.
The second section gives a counter
view to that of the British through “The Boston
Gazette” from the 1760’s to early 1770’s
The third section presents the
political machinations of the governments of Britain,
France and America, mostly through secret documents of the
1770’s and 1780’s.
The final section consists of the
pamphlets, broadsides etc. that moulded the ideas and
actions of both the politicians and people, particularly
in America.
As
a whole, this CD-ROM provides the contemporary information
by which students are able to assess for themselves the
relative importance of the events and ideas that created
the American Revolution. The documents, all original
and exactly as they appeared at the time, expand
enormously the information from books, teachers, general
studies etc. which is generally available. In
particular, they give intelligent students the opportunity
for original thought, leading to their own conclusions.

MUSIC AND CHANT
FROM GREAT RELIGIONS
The vast
majority of the world’s population can be grouped under
one of five main religions. The most ancient of
which are Judaism and Hinduism. Just as Judaism laid
the groundwork for Christianity and Islam, so Hinduism
pre-dated and influenced Buddhism. The music in this
series represents the rich heritage of each religion and
its links with other traditions. The difference, for
example of the songs of the European Jews and those of
their Oriental counterparts illustrates the influence of
adopted lands, whilst formal church music and Saeta
singing at Easter in Seville appear a world apart.
The Islam tape shows how Muslims have been strict
adherents to Arabic forms of chanting, while Hindus and
Buddhists have followed the musical expression of host
countries as heard in Bali and Tibet. £11 per
tape.
