THE PERFORMING ARTS OF CHINA

A series of six audiotapes on music, dance and the Chinese Opera.  Based on recordings made in 1973 in Taiwan and 1983 and 1984 in mainland China, by Deben Bhattacharya.  £11 per tape

CE1 SILK-STRINGED INSTRUMENTS OF CHINA Recorded in China and Taiwan, this tape contains music of silk-stringed instruments such as the pear-shaped lute Pi-pa and the box-zither Guochin (both 2000 years old).  Gu-zhen (a zither of 21 strings), various fiddles and long-necked lutes are also played solo and in orchestra situations.

CE2 STORY-TELLING WITH MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Recorded in Inner Mongolia (from far North to far South Suzhou), this tape contains various styles of story-telling in songs, accompanied by fiddles, lutes and percussion instruments.  These are traditional stories set to music from ancient times

CE3 MUSIC FROM THE SILK ROUTE Songs, instrumental music and dance music belonging to the Uighur and the Kazakh traditions living in the Chinese Central Asian Province of Sinkiang.  The Uighurs belong to the Turkic racial origin and are of the Islamic faith.  Both the Uighurs and the Kazakhs have their own music and dance, quite distinct from the Chinese ones.

CE4 THE CHINESE OPERA Examples of music from the old “Peking Opera” which fled to Taiwan during the Communist take-over of the country are presented in this tape alongside the recordings of the “Peking Opera” of Beijing in 1983 and 1984.  It also includes mu7sic from the Operas of Suzhou and Gangzhou, today’s Canton.

CE5 MUSIC AND DANCE OF THE MINORITY COMMUNITIES Recorded in Southwest China, this tape contains the music of some of the minority peoples, such as the Yis and the Bais who live in the Provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan.  Songs and instruments reproduced on this tape are unique to each community.

CE6 MUSIC AND DANCE OF THE CHILDREN OF CHINA In Children’s education, particular attention is given to the study of music and dance in China.  This tape represents some astonishing performances of Chinese music played on Chinese as well as Western instruments, by the children from various parts of the country. 

MUSIC AND CHANT FROM GREAT RELIGIONS 

The vast majority of the world’s population can be grouped under one of five main religions.  The most ancient of which are Judaism and Hinduism.  Just as Judaism laid the groundwork for Christianity and Islam, so Hinduism pre-dated and influenced Buddhism.  The music in this series represents the rich heritage of each religion and its links with other traditions.  The difference, for example of the songs of the European Jews and those of their Oriental counterparts illustrates the influence of adopted lands, whilst formal church music and Saeta singing at Easter in Seville appear a world apart.  The Islam tape shows how Muslims have been strict adherents to Arabic forms of chanting, while Hindus and Buddhists have followed the musical expression of host countries as heard in Bali and Tibet.  £11 per tape.
